Tong Leadership Academy celebrates improved Ofsted rating to ‘good’

Staff and pupils at Tong Leadership Academy are celebrating after the school was graded ‘Good’ in all areas by Ofsted.

The report, published by Ofsted this week, follows an inspection at the Bradford secondary school on 18 and 19 October 2023.

After recognising in its last inspection in 2019 that the school has been ‘transformed’ since joining Star Academies, Ofsted has acknowledged that further improvements have been made across the school, which resulted in the school securing a ‘Good’ judgement. This achievement marks an important milestone in the academy’s transformation journey and demonstrates that its improvement programme is leading to improved educational provision.

Ofsted inspectors, who judged the school to be ‘good’ in all four areas of the inspection framework, praised the whole school community on the improvements.

The report noted that ‘the school’s curriculum is highly ambitious’. Developments brought in to improve teaching and learning were recognised as having had a positive impact in the school, with inspectors concluding that ‘outcomes for pupils are improving.’

The school’s work to support all pupils to develop their reading and nurture a love of books was also praised, with inspectors commenting ‘pupils enjoy the school’s reading programme. Those at the earliest stages of reading receive targeted support regularly to help them to catch up to their peers.’

The report also recognised the strength of the work that takes place to prepare pupils for life in modern Britain, through the personal development programme, with inspectors stating that ‘leaders, including those overseeing safeguarding, work together to ensure that they adapt the personal, social and health education (PSHE) curriculum to take account of local issues and events. This helps pupils to remain safe. The curriculum ensures pupils understand issues such as diversity. It develops their pride about the area in which they live and the school in which they learn.’

Dan Styles, Principal at Tong Leadership Academy, said:

“Securing a ‘Good’ Ofsted grading is a significant achievement for the school and the wider community. It is testament to the hard work and commitment of our wonderful pupils, parents, staff and governors.

“We hope this provides parents and carers with confidence that the steps taken and measures implemented by the leadership team and Star Academies are leading to improved educational provision for our young people.

“Whilst we rightly celebrate and recognise the importance of this milestone, we remain focused, determined and ambitious in our pursuit to achieve an ‘outstanding’ level of education for our young people.”
