The Sunday Times names “astonishing” TIGHS as one of its schools of the year

We are delighted that Tauheedul Islam Girls’ High School and Sixth Form College (TIGHS) has been selected by The Sunday Times as the Northwest State Secondary School of the Year in its Schools Guide 2020.

The newspaper’s annual Schools Guide, Parent Power, identifies the 2,000 highest-achieving independent and state schools in the UK, ranked by their most recent examination results.

Following another set of outstanding A-level and GCSE results this year, TIGHS has been rated the top-performing non-selective state school in the country. Our founding school achieved 37th place overall in the national league table, which includes all selective schools. This is the first year that TIGHS has featured in The Sunday Times tables, where it also ranked 5th in the North West regional tables – again, the highest placed non-selective school. 84% of exams at A-level achieved grades A*-B, the second highest-achieving in the region.

The Sunday Times unveiled the schools of the year in its annual Parent Power supplement this week. TIGHS was lauded for its “astonishing” exam results in what it referred to as a “brilliant debut”. The article lavished further praise on the Blackburn school’s exceptional outcomes: “Founded in 1984, it is part of the Star Academies group of primary and secondary schools, and wins our Northwest State Secondary School of the Year award on its debut in our Parent Power rankings. Its results are little short of astonishing. Raking fifth in the northwest and 37th in the UK, the school has hit heights never reached before by a school with a non-selective intake.”

Mufti Hamid Patel CBE, Chief Executive of Star Academies, reflects on the achievements and underlines the wider mission of the school, “It is an honour for Tauheedul Islam Girls’ High School (TIGHS) to have been named North West State School of the Year by The Sunday Times. Our amazing students work exceptionally hard to achieve life-changing outcomes, with the support of their devoted parents and our fantastic teachers and support staff. Although TIGHS has consistently been one of the country’s top-performing schools for a number of years, we pride ourselves on supporting all our pupils not only to succeed academically but to develop good character and have a commitment to serving their communities passionately.”
