Star pupils discover ‘a change in time’ with innovator challenges

As British Science Week celebrates its 30th anniversary, Star Academies launches its Star Innovator challenges; a series of challenges to ignite our young people’s minds and spark their interest in science through research, investigation and discovery.

Budding scientists across our primary and secondary schools have been set a scientific challenge, themed around the British Science Week topic of ‘time’. The challenges form part of Star schools’ programmes of activity to support British Science Week – a 10-day celebration of science, engineering, technology and maths.

Pupils in Early Years and Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2) are being tasked with discovering all about dinosaurs, through the challenge, pupils will learn why and how time has moved on since the time of the dinosaurs.

Key Stage 2 pupils (Years 3 to 6) will investigate how an organism or items we use in our daily lives, such as a telephone or computer, has changed and how human behaviour or actions have adapted as a result.

Secondary school pupils have been challenged to delve into the virtual world of artificial intelligence (AI) and consider how it is already shaping our everyday lives and how the technology is expected to evolve in the future. Their research will uncover examples of how AI is being used to our benefit and where it is putting civilisation at risk.

The links below provide further details about the challenges and the fantastic science prizes that will be awarded to the winning entries.

Primary: Early Years & Key Stage 1

Primary: Key Stage 2

How to enter

Parents will receive a letter from their child’s school with details about how to enter the competition. All entries must be submitted to the child’s school by midday on Monday 15 April 2024. All submissions must include the child’s name, year group and, if applicable, class name.

Each school will review their pupils’ entries and shortlist two pieces of work in each category. The shortlisted entries will be submitted to the national final, where they will be judged alongside entries from other Star schools across the country. The top three entries in each category will all be awarded a prize. Good luck to all our enthusiastic scientists!
