Star connects pupils’ interest in science with innovator challenges

Star Academies is once again celebrating British Science Week with a series of Star Innovator challenges. Our budding scientists across our primary and secondary schools have each been set a scientific challenge, themed around the British Science Week topic of ‘connections’. The challenges form part of schools’ programmes of activity to support British Science week – a 10-day celebration of science, engineering, technology and maths.

Pupils in Reception and Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2) are being tasked with carrying out an action that can make a big difference in the ‘Earth Calling’ challenge. Pupils are being asked to think about how they can look after our bees, make feeding stations or homes for our native insects, birds and animals or tackle litter near their home, connecting the little ‘me’ and making a big difference.

In the Country Calling’ challenge, Key Stage 2 pupils (Years 3 to 6) will investigate and plan actions to make a difference to challenges faced by our country. Pupils are being asked how they can help with traffic congestion or litter near their home or support a local habitat to help native animals and plants flourish.

Secondary school pupils, in the ‘Community Calling’ task, have been challenged to research and think of an idea or project that will make a ‘big’ difference to the environmental challenges faced in their communities and then plan actions and steps they need to take to make a change. Issues such as litter, pollution, access to green spaces, and large-scale infrastructure projects can all be considered.

The links below provide further details about the challenges and the fantastic science prizes that will be awarded to the winning entries.

Primary: Reception & Key Stage 1
Primary: Key Stage 2
Secondary: Key Stage 3 & Key Stage 4
How to enter

Parents will receive a letter from their child’s school with details about how to enter the competition. All entries must be submitted to the child’s school by midday on Friday 31 March. All submissions must include the child’s name, year group and, if applicable, class name.

Each school will review their pupils’ entries and shortlist two pieces of work in each category. The shortlisted entries will be submitted to the national final, where they will be judged alongside entries from other Star schools across the country. The top three entries in each category will all be awarded a prize. Good luck to all our enthusiastic scientists!
