Four Star Academies schools ranked in top 20 of national GCSE performance tables

  • Four Star Academies schools have placed in the top 20 nationally for the Government’s headline Progress 8 measure for secondary schools.
  • Star schools in the top 20 are: Tauheedul Islam Girls’ High School and Sixth Form College (TIGHS) (3rd), Eden Girls’ Leadership Academy, Birmingham (4th), Eden Girls’ School, Coventry (15th), and Eden Girls’ School, Slough (17th).

Four Star Academies secondary schools have been named amongst the highest performing in England, securing places in the top 20 for the Government’s headline performance measure, Progress 8.

Published today (14th October), the Department for Education’s Progress 8 performance tables have ranked Star Academies schools in the 3rd, 4th, 15th and 17th places nationally. Progress 8 measures pupils’ academic progress from the age of 11 to the completion of their GCSEs by assessing exam results in eight key subjects.

This is the first time the Government has released national GCSE performance data since 2019, due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

With a Progress 8 score of 1.73, TIGHS, in Blackburn, has achieved third place, with another Star Academies school, Eden Girls’ Leadership Academy, Birmingham, claiming fourth place in its first ever appearance in the performance tables – after opening in 2019 – with a Progress 8 score of 1.66.

Two further free schools established by Star to make up the top 20 are Eden Girls’ School, Coventry, and Eden Girls’ School, Slough which achieved 15th and 17th place respectively, with Progress 8 scores of 1.22 and 1.21.

Reflecting on the challenges faced by pupils sitting their GCSE exams in the summer, Sir Mufti Hamid Patel CBE, Chief Executive of Star Academies, said:

“This cohort of pupils have faced unprecedented disruption over the last two years and, as the first group to sit exams since 2019, they have demonstrated exceptional resilience and dedication to their studies.

“This year’s performance data must be considered with a level of caution. It was right for the Government to remove comparison tables and pre-pandemic results from the national data following such a tumultuous period. Some schools have been disproportionately affected by covid-19 and some schools’ performance will have been affected by this year’s changes to reporting, such as early-entry results being discounted from the overall figures.

“For four of our schools to be ranked in the top 20 in England is exceptional, but what matters most is that children achieve the results they need to progress to their chosen course or destination, and to set them up for future success. I am delighted that our schools have once again excelled and delivered remarkable outcomes for our young people. These results demonstrate not just outstanding levels of attainment but also the phenomenal progress our pupils make, which is testament to the profound impact our teachers, support staff and parents are having on the lives of thousands of young people across the country.”
