Eden Girls’ Leadership Academy, Birmingham judged ‘outstanding’ in first Ofsted inspection

In its first Ofsted inspection since opening in 2019, Eden Girls’ Leadership Academy, Birmingham has been rated as ‘outstanding’. 

The whole school community is celebrating after the report, published by Ofsted this week, confirms that the school has achieved outstanding status in all areas with no recommendations for improvement. 

Following an inspection on 6 and 7 February 2024, the report lavishes praise on the quality of education and observed that ‘All pupils thrive in this unique and empowering school’.  

In their feedback on pupils’ behaviour and attitudes, the inspectors commented that ‘Pupils’ behaviour is exceptional. They display excellent self-control and awesome attitudes to learning.’ The environment of empathy and compassion that prevails in the school is commended, with the report stating that ‘Pupils support each other in lessons by sharing their learning’ and that ‘They display great care for each other both inside and outside of the classroom.’ 

Praising the school’s focus on teaching excellence and inclusivity, inspectors noted that ‘Teachers are experts in their subjects and have a strong understanding of the curriculum. They routinely adapt the curriculum to meet the needs of pupils.’ The report identifies that ‘All pupils, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) and from disadvantaged backgrounds, achieve exceptionally well’ and that ‘They experience consistent and high-quality support to become the best they can be.’   

Other highlights of the report include:  

  • ‘The school has set very high expectations for pupils’ academic achievements and their development. Staff relentlessly focus on helping them to meet these exceptional standards in all areas of school life. As a result, the pupils flourish and are equipped to fulfil their aspirations.’   
  • ‘Staff know the pupils exceptionally well. They are clearly informed about what they need to do to help pupils access the curriculum and ensure their needs are met.’ 
  • ‘Staff and pupils share highly respectful relationships which create an open and encouraging culture where all are valued.’    
  • ‘Pupils are supported well by the excellent pastoral work.’ 
  • ‘The school has instilled a culture in which pupils are free to make mistakes and to learn from them. This gives pupils the confidence and resilience they need to prosper.’ 

The report also praises the school for its focus on personal development and wellbeing, declaring that ‘An extensive personal development curriculum promotes the development of pupils’ character and interests’. The quality and breadth of initiatives were recognised, with inspectors stating that ‘Pupils also benefit from a very strong careers programme’ and that ‘Teachers highlight career pathways linked to their subjects, which enhances pupils’ future aspirations.’ 

Fulsome in its acclaim for the school, the report concludes that ‘The trust and the governors provide highly effective support’ and that ‘Staff have highly detailed professional development. They greatly appreciate this and how it helps them to do their best for the pupils.’
