Star Stories competition launched to promote the magical medium of creative writing

Star Academies has launched a prestigious short story writing competition to unearth the next generation of storytellers. Across the country, pupils attending Star schools will be putting pen to paper to be in with a chance to win a magical prize.

The Star Stories competition aims to inspire and encourage children and young people to engage in creative writing and asks all pupils in Star schools in Years 4–9 to compose an original work of fiction using no more than 500 words.

To support the competition, each Star school will deliver fun activities in the classroom to help pupils hone their writing, exploring topics from crafting characters and settings to structure and editing.  Entries will be split into two age categories: Years 4-6 and Years 7-9.Judges will be looking for stories that show originality, have compelling characters and strong original voices.

The top three budding young writers from each Star school will be invited to attend the exclusive Star Stories Celebration, a celebration of creative writing and storytelling at The Making of Harry Potter at Warner Bros. Studio in London. Winning pupils (or muggles!) will enjoy a tour of the studio and experience a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to dine in the iconic Hogwarts Great Hall. During the event, a ceremony will be held to celebrate pupils’ work and the overall winners of the Trust-wide competition will be revealed. The 20 highest scoring entries from each category will be published in a Star Stories Anthology later this year.

The competition headline sponsor and Star Platinum Partner is EG Foundation. The event will be documented by East Lancashire Chamber of Commerce and first-place winners in each age category will win £150 book vouchers from Browns Books for Students for their school library.

Mufti Hamid Patel CBE, Chief Executive of Star Academies, said:

“At Star Academies, we are always looking for ways to help our pupils develop their passion for reading and writing.  Story writing is a vehicle for communication, connection and creativity. Being able to express yourself is a skill. By cultivating this capability in our young people, we are giving them the power to share their thoughts and ideas with the world in a meaningful way.

Star Stories challenges children’s imagination in just 500 words. We look forward to receiving some excellent submissions and hope our talented pupils enjoy taking part in this competition.”

Star Stories is being run in conjunction with the Trust’s Star Readers initiative.
