Star Schools Top Progress Tables

Star’s Blackburn-based secondary schools, TIGHS and TIBHS, have made national headlines after being identified as the country’s top-performing schools in the Government’s new headline Progress 8 measure.

Staff and pupils at the schools, who celebrated phenomenal GCSE results in summer 2016, were thrilled to discover that they ranked in 1st and 3rd place for progress and overall performance when official School Performance Tables for 2015-16 were released today. The tables, which include data on over 6000 secondary schools, showed that pupils at TIGHS and TIBHS achieve, on average, more than a grade higher than their peers of a similar ability nationally.

TIGHS – which has been rated as “Outstanding” by Ofsted on three consecutive occasions and received an award from the Schools, Students and Teachers’ Network for the remarkable results of its learners – has regularly topped the performance tables, and in 2016, 97% of pupils achieved an A*-C grade in English and maths. TIBHS’ first GCSE cohort also made an emphatic statement when 95% of pupils attained grades A*-C in English and maths, cementing the Trust’s reputation for educational excellence and proving that free schools can compete with the very best schools in the country.

Pupils at both schools also performed exceptionally well in other key performance measures, vastly exceeding the national average in terms of the numbers achieving the English Baccalaureate. 79% of pupils at TIGHS and 72% of pupils at TIBHS achieved the English Baccalaureate – over 50 percentage points above the national average.

(Mufti) Hamid Patel CBE, Chief Executive of Star Academies, said: “Our schools are heavily invested in ensuring that pupils make excellent progress and our staff go above and beyond the call of duty to give all of our learners the support they need to achieve, and surpass, expectations. To see the effects of this hard work reflected in the Performance League Tables – by having not one, but two of our schools amongst the top three in the country – is hugely rewarding, and we are thrilled that TIGHS and TIBHS are having such a positive impact on pupil outcomes and opening the window of opportunity for so many of our students.

This achievement is a testament to the efforts and expertise of staff at both schools, the diligence and dedication of our pupils, and the outstanding quality of provision that all Star schools strive to deliver. We are committed to nurturing today’s young people and inspiring tomorrow’s leaders and we want to ensure that our pupils – regardless of their starting points – are immersed in an environment where educational excellence is promoted, expected and celebrated. It is immensely gratifying to see that we are achieving this vision, and we hope to continue to build on this success. Congratulations to all involved.”
