Star redoubles community support for the festive season

During the winter period, the prevalence of those less fortunate than ourselves is heightened. Covid-19 has exacerbated this further with the inequality gap in our communities becoming even more pronounced during the pandemic. With Christmas fast approaching, the festive period offers an opportunity for Star Academies and our schools to demonstrate their contributions to the wider community through charitable action.

Our annual Festive Winter Gift Programme will see all 29 Star schools participate in a multitude of fundraising and volunteering activities that will touch the lives of hundreds of people this winter. Beginning on 16th November and running until Christmas, the campaign will focus on supporting those in our communities – young and old – who are unwell, elderly or living in care, and those experiencing homelessness, loneliness or food poverty.

As the festive season approaches, across the Star family we are redoubling our efforts to raise funds and donations to support the most vulnerable people in our communities, including those living in care homes or who will be spending the festive period in hospital. Our pupils and staff will also continue to reach out to those facing isolation this Christmas to spread friendship, positivity and hope by distributing cards, messages and gifts to local care home residents and visit them virtually to offer companionship and provide entertainment.

As part of this year’s charitable drive, all Star Schools will come together for our ‘Food for All Week’. From 7th to 13th December, our Festive Winter Gift Programme will focus on the production and distribution of food parcels and meals to those experiencing food poverty. We aim to deliver over 50,000 food parcels and hot meals to our schools’ local communities during this single week.

At Star Academies, we pride ourselves on making a positive difference to society. Our schools play an important role in their communities and, through our Star Family Hubs, we are committed to playing an active role and supporting members of the Star family and wider society. Throughout the pandemic, our schools established Star Family Hubs to provide much needed support for vulnerable and isolated members of the community and for key workers.

As well as benefitting vulnerable people in our communities, our pupils will also gain from their involvement by experiencing first-hand the positive impact of helping those less fortunate. The Programme links to each of our STAR values – Service, Teamwork, Ambition and Respect – and offers our pupils a valuable learning opportunity.

Mufti Hamid Patel CBE, Chief Executive of Star Academies, said:

“The pandemic has created a ripple effect of anxiety, isolation and hardship across our communities. Through our Star Family Hubs and thanks to the tremendous efforts of our schools’ staff, pupils and families, we have already provided over £400,000 worth of food, toiletries and PPE to vulnerable members of the Star family and the wider community since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. Our commitment to our communities doesn’t stop there. We are committed to improving the lives of others and the festive season is always one of the times in our school calendar when we step up our efforts to offer a helping hand to those in need. This year we are be redoubling our efforts through our Star Family Hubs to provide much need support, as well as a sprinkle of festive cheer, across our communities.”

Our Festive Winter Gift Programme brings our schools’ leadership specialism to the fore as pupils get involved in planning and participating in a range of charitable and volunteering opportunities. Some of our schools will be running enterprise activities to raise funds to purchase gifts to be distributed within their local communities, whilst others will be thinking of ways to safely interact with individuals living close to their schools who have no one with whom to spend the festive season.
