Former Ofsted chief heads high profile line-up for Bradford lecture series

Senior leaders from all Bradford schools are invited to hear from some of the most authoritative and influential leaders in the education sector and beyond as part of a series of lectures to take place in Bradford.

Sir Michael Wilshaw, former Chief Inspector of Schools in England, head of Ofsted from 2012 until 2016 and currently Professor of Education at St Mary’s University in London, will host the series of six lectures on leadership in education. The first event takes place on Thursday 20th June (4.30pm – 6.30pm) at Tong Leadership Academy, Westgate Hill Street, Bradford, BD4 6NR. All six events are free to attend for anyone working in a senior leadership team at a Bradford school. Places are offered on a first come first served basis and attendees must register online at www.starinstitute.org.uk/lecture

The series aims to inspire school leaders to take their schools to new heights through insight from some of the most experienced and respected leaders in the sector.  It will focus on core themes that are fundamental to the role of school leadership, bringing Sir Michael’s experience together with inputs from a range of contributors from Bradford and beyond, debating important topics such as the value of assessment, the role of accountability and the importance of communication.

The programme for the first lecture, entitled ‘The importance of leadership in raising standards’, features Susan Hinchcliffe, Leader of Bradford City Council, and Anne-Marie Canning, Chair of the Bradford Opportunity Area Board, alongside Sir Michael.

Sophie Backen, Head of Leadership Development at Star Institute, said:

“Originally conceived as a professional development opportunity for our academies, we are delighted to have been able to open up these lectures to a much wider audience. They are completely free of charge and open to senior leadership teams from all Bradford schools.”

The Star Leadership lecture series is being organised by Star Institute in partnership with Bradford Opportunity Area, TeachBradford and Bradford Council.

Star Institute is the leadership development arm of Star Academies.

The remaining five events in the series take place on:

  • 26 September 2019 – The importance of leadership in establishing the school culture.
  • 12 December 2019 – The centrality of the quality of teaching.
  • 16 January 2020 – The value and use of assessment.
